The first grammar-focused review textbook in the Learning World series, covering all grammar up to Learning World Book 3.
Recommended for 5th and 6th grade elementary students.
Created in response to the question, “Will I really be ready for junior high school like this?”, this book organizes previously learned grammar rules and aims to help learners read more complex English sentences and express themselves more deeply.
Target audience:
For students who have completed Learning World Book 3 / Upper elementary school students with a background in English from early childhood
Written by Mikiko Nakamoto
A4 size / Full color / 80 pages
Includes: Achievement Targets, Name Card, and Certificate of Completion
The textbook consists of 18 steps, with 1 step = 4 pages.
The separately sold Teacher’s Guide suggests teaching each step over 3 lessons, but depending on students’ learning background and proficiency, it can be completed in 2 lessons.
For classes held twice a week, each step can be taught over 4 lessons.
Please adjust the number of lessons per step based on the needs of your class.
Covers key grammar points typically taught in Grades 7–8 (Junior High School Years 1–2), such as:
Be-verbs, plural nouns, Wh-questions, third person singular -s, present progressive, adjectives, prepositions, adverbs, future tense, past tense, comparative and superlative forms, gerunds, and infinitives.

Animal Talk – Dialogues between animals
Using photos of animals, target sentence structures are presented in relatable, easy-to-understand situations.
Depending on the students’ level, you can first play the audio and have them listen for the meaning, read aloud while focusing on grammar, or practice understanding the content thoroughly.

★ Familiar colorful teaching tools are now easily available as digital resources!
Review is done through information gap activities, encouraging students to use English as they interact.
Even with expressions they are expected to know, students may struggle unexpectedly—so we revisit them for reinforcement.
More time is spent on grammar points that are less well understood, while students who grasp the content can move on quickly. Each STEP is designed to build up like climbing stairs, one level at a time.
★ Memorize entire sentence structures through rhythm! It will be useful even after entering junior high school.
To make sentence structures easier to remember and harder to forget, students are encouraged to fully memorize chants. Then, they use those structures in Let’s Write activities and daily lesson chats with teachers and classmates.
The goal is not just to memorize, but to actively speak using the expressions they’ve learned—by replacing vocabulary and applying the patterns.
Please increase the amount of time students spend actually speaking English.
★★ Important! A complete review of grammar you thought you understood!
Grammar is essential for speaking and writing in a more detailed and accurate way.
This page helps students clearly understand the structure behind the English they’ve been using “by feel” up to now, so they can recognize the patterns and write them correctly.
By gaining a solid understanding of grammar through this book, students will significantly improve their ability to use English effectively in junior high school and beyond.
★★ Important!!
Encourage students to use all the English they know to express themselves in writing—it doesn’t have to be limited to just what’s on the page!
This is practical English composition. By using the target sentence structures to write authentic English, students develop the ability to apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations.
Grammar mistakes are corrected during the writing process. For example, a sentence like “I like dogs” may be understandable but incorrect. This exercise allows teachers to explain and correct such errors one by one, helping students truly understand.
Writing is not the end—teachers must always engage students in English based on what they’ve written.
Teachers can create meaningful, real communication by asking follow-up questions about students’ sentences.
(This post-writing Q&A makes a noticeable difference in English ability a year later.)
Students take on a task using the target sentence structures.
Since they discuss with classmates and organize their own opinions, this activity may take more time.
You can adjust lesson time in this section—for example, by having students finish the rest at home.
★ Conduct this activity while looking at the illustrations from Let’s Get Started using….
The listening test is conducted at normal speed and involves picking out key points from within a conversation.

The Learning World series uses criterion-referenced assessment rather than relative evaluation.
In the final month, students give a self-presentation using the “Achievement Targets” found at the beginning of the textbook.
They color in the numbers for the goals they have achieved. Once all the targets are colored in, please sign the Certificate of Achievement and present it to the student.
