What is the AJ Picture Dictionary like?
It has a vocabulary of over 1600 words. There are also many verbs and adjectives.
The realistic pictures of daily life scenes and the style of memorizing vocabulary in English sentences are very popular.
The dialogues under the scenes are designed so that you can say the vocabulary words in the pictures as you learn them.
The vocabulary is not stopped at the word level, but is memorized together with the word order.
AJ’s PICTURE DICTIONARY
The main character is an alien named “AJ. One day, he takes off on a UFO, but falls off the ship and finds himself in the middle of a barbecue party on Earth. Bob and his family experience various aspects of life on Earth. They spend time together with Bob’s family on safari, at the aquarium, and helping out in the kitchen, but they also deal with the themes of preserving nature and RRR (reuse, reduce, recycle).
VOICES from teachers
![]() VOICE 1 I use it as a teaching aid for finding words outside of the text in my class of young children, and as a dictionary for self-expression presentations in Learning World 1 and onward. Dialogue cards would make it easier to use, so please make dialogue cards. |
![]() VOICE 3 When I started teaching Jr. 1 and 2, I realized that they lacked vocabulary. I feel it is important to increase the vocabulary of elementary school students so that they can understand the meaning, read it, and spell it. I use Learning World as my textbook, but I also have my elementary school students take it because it has information on school room names, club activities, and directions, which LW does not have. I think it is important for them to be exposed to English outside of the textbook. ![]() ![]() |
![]() VOICE 4 I have had children who come to class at different times and have to wait until the lesson starts to watch AJ, allowing them to listen to the audio on the classroom CD deck. |
![]() VOICE 5 For newly enrolled upper grade elementary school children… ![]() I have a fairly new student in one of my upper elementary classes. He is quite shy, and is rarely the first to speak out in class, which is understandable given that his two classmates have four years English experience. Under this condition, opportunities to have him feel success with English are few and far between…(Read more) |
![]() VOICE 6 creative speaking and creative writingに。 ![]() With “How was your Winter Vacation?” lessons well and truly finished, our heads and our students’ heads are back into their textbooks… As you know, I’m always keen to provide creative expression opportunities for students. AJ Picture Dictionary helps a lot with both creative speaking and creative writing.(Read more)

![]() VOICE 7 When I have extra time in my class, I look at the Qs in AJ Teacher Note and chat with the kids. The aquarium scene is, ![]() T:How many legs does an octopus have? S: Eight! T: How many legs does a squid have? S: Ten! T: What’s AJ looking at? S: The angler fish. Each child also points out what he or she thinks is beautiful and what he or she thinks is ugly. T: Point to something beautiful./Point to something ugly. Each answer is different and interesting. Note: The audio of the songs and chants on the Fill-in-the-Lyrics worksheets in the AJ Teacher Note is not included on the QR. The AJ Songs and Chants CD is required for the Fill-in-the-Lyrics worksheets. |
